Goldie must embrace a new world, new rules, and a defiant protector she secretly wants. Continue the journey with the Princesses of Myth in this adventurous novel from New York Times Bestselling Author Joanne Wadsworth.

To love and protect…across worlds.

The two warring nations on planet Magio have now been united under a leading team of eight—four warriors from Dralion and four protectors from Peacio—a team who must now work together to bring their divided nations back together as one.

Goldie Wincrest is a princess of Dralion, cursed with a skill she’s never disclosed to another, an ability outlawed from their world centuries ago. She is a Chaser, one who must fight the deadly pull of her assassin ability, only she can no longer trust either herself or her fragmented thoughts any longer. There is only one pathway open to her, to choose her Destroyer and to give him the power he needs to see to her death should she go completely Dark.

Sorrell Sona is a fierce protector, a fighter of unparalleled strength, and when Goldie shares the knowledge of her outlawed ability with him, he is left in a terrible position. He must choose whether he can be her Destroyer should she become one of the Dark, or instead take a chance on seeking to be her savior.

Can he slay a princess of their world should she turn, or is he in too deep with her?

The Princesses of Myth series will always be incredibly special to me. This is the first ever series which I dreamed up in 2009–with a huge cast and draft copies of four books written that year–drafts which would eventually become the foundation for this series. From those drafts, I rewrote the first book, PROTECTOR, then managed to secure my first ever publishing contract. This series is in fact the one that launched my writing career, to what it has become today. I met my amazing editors through this series, as well as authors from the same publishing house who I now consider awesome friends, but best of all, I’ve met all of you, my wonderful readers, who’ve embraced all my stories and come with me on this magical journey I’ve embarked on. I couldn’t have done this without you. Your wonderful reviews and messages, I take straight into my heart. You’ve asked me for more books in the Princesses of Myth series, and I’m right there with you. More books are coming after CHASER. If you’d like to, check out the end of the post for the cover to the next book in this series, PIRATE PRINCESS.

Here’s an exclusive excerpt below for a taste of what’s to come in CHASER.

I thudded down on a crunchy matting of fallen leaves and pine nettles and almost lost my balance as Sorrell released me. I wobbled at the edge of a sheer cliff where it fell away with rolling forested hills spread out far into the distance. A thick layer of gray cloud swept across the sky, from horizon to horizon.

A storm brewed, and not just within nature, but within the man at my back too.

I righted myself and went to turn around, only I changed my mind.

I stayed exactly where I was.

“You’re giving me your back, Princess. You do realize that, right?” His deep voice floated over me as he loomed from behind, his intoxicating aroma as well.

“That’s because I already trust you.” I would be prickling with unease otherwise.

“Like hell you do.” A snort, his disbelief clear to hear.

“Honestly, I do.” The tips of my boots rode the fine edge of the cliff where the odd leaf whisked away in the breeze and fluttered over the steep side. Slowly, I turned around and faced him, my gaze directly on his. “Do you want to know how and why?”

“Sure, explain yourself, because right now I’m incredibly tempted to toss you over this cliff.”

“I have a very new and extremely aggravating skill.” I dipped my head, closed my eyes and braced myself for the truth I now needed to speak. “One day soon,” I continued as I lifted my gaze back to his, “I will need you to see to my death.”

“Well, today works for me.” Seizing my arms, he tipped me back until I leaned right over the edge of the ledge at a rather precarious angle, my blond hair fluttering and my sword swaying back heavily on my hip.

I didn’t fight his move though, one which showed his clear dominance, which was exactly what had brought me to him in the first place. “You speak my kind of language, Sorrell.”

Amarisa Sol is a princess of the Eastern Isles of Magio, a privateer who is determined to uncover all the riches of her world, and all while discovering if there is truth behind the supposed end of the war between the countries of Peacio and Dralion.

Wishing you all a wonderful week. Stay safe.

Happy Reading.

More about, HEALER: A new release.

To love and protect…across worlds.

War rages on planet Magio, where soul-bonds are forbidden between the people of Peacio and Dralion, yet within a high-ranking inner circle, those illicit bonds exist and teeter perilously on the edge of discovery.

Twenty-year-old Peacian empath Belle Benner has been waiting two years for her soul-bound mate to claim her and when she finally meets him, she discovers he’s the last person she ever expected him to be. Her mate is a warrior healer from within the enemy’s ranks, a man she must release if she wishes to accept the greatest challenge she’ll ever undertake, that of bringing their world’s warring to an end.

Dralion warrior healer Nicolas Vegara will do whatever it takes to keep the war between the nations of Peacio and Dralion from escalating. If he must give up his forbidden soul-bound mate, he will. If dangerous lies must be told to safeguard her, he’ll utter them, and if he must lay down his life for those he’s called to protect, then he’ll do so.

It’s time for the battle of two warring nations to come to a head. Can this young mated pair bring together two battling kings to resolve their issues…and find love along the way for themselves?

“C’mon, Belle. Let’s get you inside and I’ll call Nicolas to come up.” Faith steered me back inside her room then returned to the palace balcony and hands cupped to her mouth, called over the railing, “Nicolas, are you free?”

“I am now. I’m on my way.” He stepped away from Killian then a mere moment later, he shimmered in on the balcony, wrapped his arms around Faith and chuckling, planted a noisy kiss on her cheek. A wolf whistle and a hoot echoed up from below and Faith’s cheeks went red.

I backed up a little farther into her room.

Nicolas caught my movement, lifted his chin and cast me a look through the open doors.

“Hey.” I lifted a wobbly hand.

“You’re her.” Still looking at me, he growled low to Faith, “Why did you bring her here?”

“I had a vision and saw that the two of you needed to talk. Ask Belle all about it. I’m going to leave you two alone so you can chat.” She patted his back then shimmered and disappeared.

Oh boy. I hadn’t wanted to talk to Nicolas on my own. I should have told Faith to remain so she could help me get through this first meeting. “I, ah…” My tongue got stuck.

“You have a dimple each side of your mouth and a mole above your left eyebrow.” With his intense blue gaze drilling into me, he stepped through the doors, his belted sword swaying at his side. “I saw you on Earth last week with Faith and Silvie before one of the others in your group ’ported you away. Faith told me back then that you’re a protector and an empath, one in the know about hers and Davio Loveria’s bond, just as I am too.”

“That’s right, and you’re Nicolas, her healer and knight in shining armor.” I dragged in a deep breath and let it slowly back out. “That was meant as a compliment, in case it didn’t quite come out that way.”

How Do You Write YA?

ya blog

I found some young ones. So cute. 🙂

Without a doubt, YA (young adult) is a very hot genre to write. It’s been around for a while, although there was a turning point in 2008 when it truly exploded. A number of writers tried their hand at it. Some found YA was for them, and others discovered writing this genre is tougher than it looks. Although, YA isn’t about to slow down anytime soon. Readers of YA are committed. They’re always after more, and for writers of this genre, we’re here to deliver.

Now, what makes YA so popular?

Those teen years we go through, are an incredible time. They’re exciting, fun, awful, painful, scary, amazing, and everything in between. It’s when we discover the world and where we fit in. In our teen years, our emotions are pure, and all that we go through is intense and totally confusing.

That’s why YA captures such a wide-ranging readership base. It crosses the generations, and is read by young adults and adults alike. There is no age barrier to YA. Even my 90-year-old grandmother has recently read my YA fantasy romance. It was her first foray into this genre, and she was fascinated by how enthralled she became. (Phew.) The story reminded her of the time she lived by the seat-of-her-pants. (Yep, seat-of-her-pants. She was such a rebel in her younger years.) She wants more YA–and just like that, she’s hooked.

So, let’s cover what YA writers should be aware of. There are certainly some points to note.

  • YA books focus on the essence of what teens go through, and I’m not talking about learning to drive a car, going to prom, or that very first date.
  • YA readers are smart. They want deep storylines, and fast-paced action, so don’t even attempt to write simple. Teens will spot simple a mile away, and just get annoyed.

In fact, it’s often said writers must pay attention to the three core questions which should be at the heart of every YA novel.

  • Who am I?
  • Where do I belong?
  • How do I get there?

A ton of new questions can arise from these three core ones, but fundamentally they make great building blocks when writing YA.

Your characters are about to take the journey in discovering the answers they seek. There’ll be struggles and mistakes, bends and twists in the road, triumphs and tears, but that’s how teens uncover all life has to offer. The journey they undertake must be deep. They must challenge themselves to sort out any inner fears and frustrations, and while doing so, remain completely relatable.

All in all, YA books are about teens coming to terms with who they are, and experiencing all life’s ups and downs along the way.

Okay, so if you’re after some YA novel guidelines, here are some helpful pointers.

  • So far, there are no forbidden subjects, but whatever you delve into must be done with sensitivity and care, taking into account the age of the teen reader. Often we can allude to something, and then fade out the scene. The YA reader is smart, and they’ll be aware of what’s happened.
  • Overall, teens will identify more strongly with the character’s feelings, and this is why intense situations don’t always need to be written in.
  • Characters are teens, and aged within those years.
  • YA novels generally run between 40,000-75,000, but you will find books either side of that. If there is a particular publisher you’re after then make sure you check out their website’s submission guidelines to see if they have a preferred word count.
  • There are also no vocabulary restrictions for YA, but make certain any coarse language is age or topic appropriate.
  • YA is predominantly written in 1st or 3rd Person (I said, or she said.) Although there are some in 2nd Person (you say.)
  • And lastly, any subgenre is enjoyed, like fantasy, romance, paranormal, contemporary, sci-fi, historical, mystery, adventure, humor. There are no limitations on this.

I hope this post has been helpful for those writers wanting to delve into YA, or for those who just want to know a little more about this intriguing genre. Even in writing this post, I was surprised by how much I had to share. YA is certainly not easy to write, although it’s incredibly enjoyable.

But there’s more…

I’m going to share a link to the most traumatic post I’ve ever written which was featured this week on Dear Teen Me. I cried like a baby as I wrote it.

Here’s what happened. A few weeks ago, I was asked by “Dear Teen Me” to write a post, and I was thrilled to accept. Then I received the details. I was to write a letter to my teen-self, and I tell you, it was the most traumatic writing experience ever. Who wants to write a letter to their teen self? Not me, but I’d committed to it, so I jumped in with both feet and shared from my heart.

If you want to find out what made me blubber and cry, (I think I went through an entire box of tissues,) then check out the post here.

Thanks for taking a look if you did.

If you have any questions, just leave me a comment. I love hearing from you. And if you’d like to read a YA novel, then feel free to check out my YA/NA Magio-Earth series with its abundance of 4&5 Star reviews. Enjoy, and take care this week.

Eighteen-year-old Faith Stryker is prepared to leap out into the unknown world beyond her home shores of New Zealand to experience life. Only she never expected to encounter Magio, a planet with two warring countries, where its people reach adulthood at eighteen by coming into their strength and prophetic abilities. Only after Faith discovers she’s a halfling–thanks to her warrior father she’s never met–does her own skill of forethought develop.

Peacio’s Prince Davio Loveria is sent to the young Faith Stryker by his grandfather, but not all goes as planned. Davio discovers Faith isn’t just a halfling, she’s also his soul-bound mate–an intense relationship he cannot, nor will not, give up.

With two wars now waging…one of land and the other of the heart…can the young lovers find their place in the world?

Yay! Here's the Cover Reveal for ENCHANTER, Magio-Earth Book Three. Releasing Soon.

I’ve been waiting eagerly to show you this cover.

Magio-Earth Book Three

Coming May 5th, 2014

With Kensington Books, Lyrical Press Imprint.

To love and protect…across worlds.

On planet Magio war rages between Peacio’s protectors and Dralion’s warriors. Friendships and soul-bonds are forbidden, yet deadly secrets lurk within a high-ranking inner circle.

Eighteen-year-old Peacian Silvie Carver’s worst problem is completing finals until her best friend receives forewarning that Silvie is the key to keeping her enemy king from making a decision that will escalate the war. Silvie must save her loved ones’ soul-bonds from being torn apart, and all without revealing her emerging and rare fire skill during the mission.

Dralion warrior and enchanter, Guy Moyer, has been fighting his soul’s demand to find his mated one…who also happens to be his enemy. Except Silvie shows up on Dralion’s off-world Australian Outback station and though they renounce their bond, his soul demands he aid and protect her.

When Silvie finds herself impersonating a warrior, she’s pulled to the fiery edge of her control as she seeks to influence the king’s decision. Can the mated pair turn the tide of the war and find their place with each other?

In ENCHANTER, the heroine Silvie, is Faith’s best friend and the sister of Hope’s soul-mate. Silvie featured regularly in book one and two, and I couldn’t wait to write her story. I knew exactly what I’d be putting her through, and that she’d be more than ready for every challenge I threw at her. Silvie learns she is not only mated to a warrior enchanter, but holds the most deadly of the battle skills.

I also have some fabulous news for fans of this series. I’ve been waiting for Protector and Warrior to re-release with Kensington Books/Lyrical Press Imprint. Here’s an excerpt to tempt you:

Chains cranked, and the solid paneled iron gates at the entrance rolled open. This was what I’d been waiting for. Finally I’d be able to see inside the three-story high open-aired arena. It was a beauty with its ancient circular architecture.

“Wow. Do you see that?” Hope whispered to me from where we hid in a bush.

I shoved the brush farther aside, and we both poked our noses in. The protectors’ arena was close in size to our fighting force’s in Dralion. Their blocked seats were layered back and up and able to hold thousands of spectators. Groups of protectors trained on the central sandy floor with swords and spears and axes, with likely more beyond. Some of the men wore red tunics with leather-flapped skirts, and they lunged and parried, as accurate with their brutally sharp weapons as any warrior would be. The women trained in their battle leathers. So close. This was the chance I’d been waiting for. It had definitely been right to bring Hope. Hopefully she’d be able to help me keep a level head.

“Let’s go.” I gripped Hope’s hand and ’ported us. Everything darkened as I made the short jump through space.

Hope wobbled as we arrived near the wall. “Lieska, what the heck are you doing?”

“You saw the gate open. It’s an invitation I can’t turn down.” I plucked the sides of my hip-hugging black leather pants. “Look at us. I’m dressed no differently to any of the protector women, and you’re completely unassuming in jeans and a t-shirt. Except for this. The Stetson has to go. It screams Earth.” I nabbed it and tossed it behind a flax bush growing beside the wall. “Now no one’s going to suspect we’re from Dralion unless we announce it. We’ll be normal people, not catching a second glance.”

“Geez, I hate how my own words come back to bite me.” She shook her head. “Just make sure you don’t announce our arrival your way. No throwing any daggers at the protectors, because that would be announcing it, in case you weren’t aware.”

“I’m aware, and I’ll try and keep them sheathed, maybe.” I couldn’t stop from rubbing my hands together. Finally I’d have a chance to sort this problem. The hunt was on. I strode in and the breeze lifted my long brown locks and swept strands across my face. Two men battled close by and one of the men’s blade’s struck flesh and bone. Blood spurted in a wide arc. My blood thrummed to join the fight. Oh yeah. I wish I’d been the one to inflict that wound. The injured man grasped his arm, holding the edges closed. His blood ceased running and his skin began to knit together. A fast-healer. Damn. What a shame.

“Ew.” Hope puffed as she caught up. “Are your senses still on fire?”

“Burning bright. So stay close in case I need to ’port us out of here quick.” I followed the safety rail around the perimeter. My senses flared. There. A man in black jeans stretched as if readying himself for training. The denim molded his butt. Mm-mmm.

He selected a two-handed sword from the rack and twirled it in a precise figure eight. Slowly he built up speed, and moved through a series of fluid training moves. He held the battle skills, and only those who had such an affinity for their weapon did.

“Is that him? The one you’re after?” Hope hauled me to a stop.

“Yes, and it appears he needs a battling partner. Wait here.”

“I’ll wait provided you agree not to kill anyone.”

“We’ll see, just don’t draw any attention to yourself.”

“Huh, I can’t believe you’re telling me not to draw attention to myself. Hello. Give yourself your own pep talk.” With a harrumph, she snuck under the railing. She plopped onto the wooden bench and grasped the edge under her knees, squishing her knuckles.

“I would take my own advice, except I don’t think I’m up for listening. That’s why I have you.” She was one of my best friends, even though she’d accepted a protector as her mate. I could deal.

Stroking the hilt of my ever-present side sword, I walked toward the one my senses had flared on.

I hope you all enjoyed that.

Thank you all for helping me celebrate the release of HUNTER by joining me today. Thank you. Thank you. 🙂

A Young Adult/New Adult Fantasy Romance.

HUNTER will release in just a few weeks, so keep your eye out for it.

All of the books in this series are stand alone and feature different heroines and heroes, so you can read any one you like first. The series is connected through characters and the worlds of Magio and Earth, and I’ve made certain your favourite characters pop up so you’ll never miss the chance of catching up with them along the way.

For fans of this series, I’d love to share an interesting tidbit about HUNTER. You first meet the heroine Lieska Alura in Warrior, and Lieska received her name from a woman I’ve never met, but who lives in the same town as me in New Zealand. How did that happen? I’d just gotten a nasty stone chip on my windscreen, dropped into the glass smith and the man replacing it mentioned how his wife, Lieska, had read Protector, the first book in my series, and loved it. I wasn’t aware the locals knew me that well. A really nice surprise. Yep, I grinned with delight. Then I couldn’t help but notice how unusual his wife’s name was. I asked him about her name and where it had come from. He said she’d never met another person with it since it’s so rare, and the origin of her name was listed as unknown.

Ahh, now a beautiful, unique name with an unknown origin sounded like a temptation to me. Those were the kinds of names I was after for the fantasy world I’d created. I told him her name was perfect for my warrior hunter, and if his wife needed an origin for her name, it was now founded on the planet Magio as “hunter, tracker, pursuer.”

To continue with that story, a couple of months ago I got another stone chip, and dropped in to chat to the same glass smith. I mentioned to him his wife’s namesake was now getting her own book. Lieska was no longer a supporting character. He was thrilled for his wife, and said his Lieska would be over the moon to hear that. I’ll certainly be dropping by the glass smith now I have the cover to ensure his wife gets a copy. I really hope she likes it as much as I do.

Capturing That Elusive Writer’s Voice and Making it Sing

Sooo true. I’m claiming this saying for myself.

When I first began the submission process on my first novel, I read over and over from agents and publishers on their websites that they wanted to see submissions reflecting a unique writer’s voice. I had no idea what that was at the time, but still thought, hey, that’s me. What’s not unique about my voice? I’m a Kiwi from Down Under. My voice is my own, and I have an extremely unique take on the world being that I’m always standing upside-down and the other-way-around. 🙂

Yeah, that’s not writer’s voice, but it wasn’t long before I truly understood what it was. I also came to realize it’s the most elusive aspect of writing, that it’s a challenge to truly grasp, yet also a challenge I could completely take on.

So, what is writer’s voice?

Writer’s voice is that wonderful combination of blending your own unique writing style with a deep understanding of your characters, along with knowing how their story best needs to be told. A writer’s voice is the most moving part of the story, and it’s sometimes referred to as the heartbeat of the main character. In other words, a writer’s voice is the magic that makes the story soar.

A strong writer’s voice brings the POV character to life, captivates the reader and has them hanging onto every word, every description, action, emotion and reaction.

A writer’s voice should be completely authentic, and most certainly not a copy of your favorite author.

A writer’s voice should also allow the reader to bond emotionally with the main character, to forge a connection that can’t be broken. This is why it’s so important for a writer to know their characters inside and out.

I’ve spoken before about understanding your characters in this way, and well before you get to the end of your first draft, otherwise there can be a ton of rewriting simply because you’ve come late to the party. A writer needs to know the heart of their main character, their essence, what makes them tick, what their strengths and ultimate fears are. You need to be intimately familiar with their entire thought process. Nothing is off-limits. And therein the magic begins.

Magic = Knowing your characters.

Magic = Constantly growing our writing skills and abilities.

Magic = Understanding, and writing your POV correctly.

That’s right, don’t forget to nail your POV within your writer’s voice. Knowing which POV would be the best in telling your story is incredibly important. 1st Person, 3rd Person, DEEP POV? Omni? The wrong POV can do your story a disservice, so study, study, study. And read widely in the genres of your stories.

I hope this post was helpful. Have you discovered and mastered your writer’s voice? Perhaps you’re still on the road to getting there. It definitely takes time and perseverance. In truth, I’m still traveling along that road. With each story I write, my writer’s voice strengthens and becomes more distinct. It’s all about the magic.

Today is also my official release date for WARRIOR. Yay! Any if you want to read a thrilling new Young Adult Fantasy series filled with intrigue at every corner, then by all means, check out the book links below to pick up your copy of PROTECTOR or WARRIOR.

When Your Book Releases in Time For Your Birthday — Yay!

What a wicked birthday present I just got. Certainly every writer’s dream. WARRIOR is set to release next Monday, but it has arrived early, and right in time for my birthday today. Yay! It’s out now wherever e-books are sold, and I’ll be sure to drop those links in for you later in the post.

First though, I’ve never brought out a full length excerpt from WARRIOR, so I’m going to rectify that today. Also, here’s what a few of the reviewers have said about WARRIOR. I’m just beaming over these.

“Imaginative world-building, stunning setting & a love fated to be.” — Jessi Gage, Author

“I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.” — The Jeep Diva, Reviewer

“I’m loving this series! So different and cool, and I just loved Silas and Hope’s relationship.” — Holly Underhill, YA/NA Reviewer

Here’s the excerpt I promised.

Silas extinguished the lamp, and moonlight filtered through the tiny square window. He rolled to his side, facing me. “We’ll stay close. I can’t dismiss the mated bond. Our souls call to one another and it’s strong.”

I felt it too.

“I can’t keep my distance from you, Hope. That would result in your death.”

“Yeah, but yours would result if my grandfather, Donaldo, ever found out about you. The need to protect goes both ways.”

A low growl rumbled from his throat. “It sounds like you’re arguing with me.”

“I’m pointing out the facts. Alexo keeps the knowledge of Faith’s relationship with Loveria a secret.”

“We don’t have their kind of relationship.”

“So this is a non-relationship?” I smiled. That actually suited me.

“Okay, honey. I got it.”

He pulled me to him. “I have no idea why, but I like you. You have a smart mouth.”

I snuggled closer, resting my cheek against his chest. “Mmm-hmm. So do you.”

He let out a slow breath and it fanned over the top of my head. “I still want to kiss you.”

“Hell, no.” I grinned to myself.

“Are you repeating my earlier words?”

“Yes, I am.” He rolled me, coming up over top. My heart raced. “Don’t–”

His kiss was potent as he claimed my mouth.

I had no response. I was lost, hypnotized as we shared breath and a moment more special than any in time.

He cupped my face in his hands and stroked my cheeks, his thoughts escaping for the first time.

I read them so clearly within the merge.

He wanted this moment to last.

My heart soared and my soul called to his on the deepest level. “We are in a world of trouble,” I murmured against his lips.

His hold tightened, intoxicating me. Then he eased away an inch, maybe two. “You have the most beautiful spun-gold hair. It catches even the moonlight and glows like silk.”

I cleared my throat. “I know I just said trouble. You should stick to your side of the bed in this non-relationship.”

A wicked grin widened his mouth. “I could drown in the brilliant violet of your eyes.”

“Do I need to slap your face?”

He laughed. “Yes.”

I pushed him away, trying to get my heartbeat to slow. “Go away.”

He rolled into me, held me close. “I’ll be good. Just keeping you warm. It’s my right.”

I curled up, squeezing my eyes shut. “I can’t believe I’m sharing a bed with you. Do you snore?”

“Terribly. I’m also a bed-hog.”

I heard the partial lie, but to which half of that statement? “Hmm, since I’m squished between you and the wall, I’m picking you’re a bed-hog.”

“You feel all warm and soft. I’m not going anywhere.” He nuzzled my hair and yawned. “Go to sleep. You’ll need your rest if you want to be on your toes tomorrow.”

I didn’t doubt it. The minutes ticked by, and I slowly relaxed. My soul-bound mate lay beside me. For one night, or perhaps for more? I had no idea.
